Lecture 1.2 Searching for Life
Overview
In this lecture, we will study what life is from the people who need to know–those looking for life on other planets. This will also introduce us to elementary principles of scientific thought.
Activities
- Read sections 4 and 5 of Baloney Detection and the Tools of Science.
- Read chapters 1 & 2 of the textbook.
- Navigate to NASA’s Mars Exploration Program webpage.
- Explore and read that webpage. Look specifically at
- Science Goal 1.
- Missions past, present and future.
- Download Lecture 1.2 slides.
- Do one of the following:
- In-person section: Attend Lecture 1.2; or
- Online section: Watch the following videos:
- Video 1.2.1 History of the Search for Life on Mars.
- Video 1.2.2, Properties of Life.
- Video 1.2.3, The Concept of Theory.
- Complete the questions on Study Guide 1.2.
Assessment
After completing the activities, log into Canvas, launch BIO 181 and complete Lec 1.2 Quiz.
